Welcome to The Gumbley Family History Blog.
This weblog (or ‘blog’, for short) contains information about the history of the Gumbley family. Members of the family interested in our genealogy are welcome to write articles here, and start conversations about our shared past (and to discuss the present, and future).
The administrator of the weblog is Matt Gumbley, who typed up notes on his uncle John’s family history research, and made them available online. These are available at Matt’s Home Page, although they’re desperately out of date, having last been updated in May 2001. Since making this information publically availble, Matt has received many emails from other Gumbleys, but due to being generally rather busy, hasn’t been able to respond to them in a timely manner. (This isn’t just the case for Gumbley family history-related email; he just gets swamped in mail, and generally “switches off”).
Hence this blog… come on in, tell your stories!

I notice that on your old family hitory site you have the following comment by John Gumbley (Aust):
“John Gumbley (an Australian, in the UK) has sent the following information:
“… all the Gumbleys in Australia are related .. some more distantly than others. Funny thing is my Dad (the oldest in his family born in 1921) is called Harold Francis. Apparently, Harold and Francis were family names. My brother is Paul Francis and I’m John James (apparently James was another family name). Now here’s what I can recall about our distant past in Oz :
John,
“All the family were butchers, stretching back to my great grandfather’s day. The great grandaddy made a lot of money out of his butcher’s shop in Sydney and apparently was big into horse racing. He helped set up Randwick Racecourse which is the biggest and oldest in Australia. The trail runs cold pre- the great grandfather’s day but when I next speak to Dad I’ll ask him for more details. It would be great to be able to tell them about their Pommie roots.”
Can anyone else provide more information on the Australian branch of the family? When did the first Gumbley move down under?”
Well… I can add a little more information for John (since we are distantly related)
John (the aussie one) your grandfather appears to be James Francis Gumbley who was the son of John J Gumbley who was in turn the son of James Gumbley (a Cab Driver in Sydney – and our common ancestor) who was in turn the son of John Gumbley who was born in Cavan in Ireland… Since there are so few Gumbleys in Ireland I assume that these Gumbleys were orignially from England… but I cannot trace that far back. John you are quite right about your side of the family (and to a lesser extent mine) appeared to be butchers mainly in the Burwood area and Farriers, horse trainers and the like as well. I know that the Gumbley family aslo married into the Noud and Frank families who were apparently very much involved with the Randwick Racecourse.
